Embracing your Natural Beauty Event in NJ

Embracing your Natural Beauty Event was held at Loft 47 in Newark NJ. The event was a mix and mingle, great opportunity to network and to meet some local naturals of New Jersey.  The event was hosted by Locs Nation and several topics were discussed such as what is the difference between having locs and  having one’s hair in twist-outs, is there a difference when it comes to the natural hair journey? Another question was raised, was it difficult to embrace their natural beauty in the corporate working environment? Throughout the several discussions different men and women expressed and explored their individual natural journey which brought us all to this wonderful event on Wednesday night. Here are a few photos from the event if you would like to see more check out our facebook page.Image

Mini Chop

Hey ladies,
So I have been out of the scope for a while because my hair faced heat damage for the first time. I didn’t know if I should cut it or grow it out. I chose the second option. So it took me an entire year to grow out the heat damage and of course I gradually cut the super straight strands. I have pictures to show for it and having color (dye) didn’t help the situation.
Throughout the year I kept my hair in protective styles for the most part sometimes rocking a beanie hat to protect my ends from the cold weathers. Weekly I deep conditioned my hair and used my Heutiful hair steamer. I would only wear my hair out on the weekend for church and for preparation to wash again.

image

See my ends are super straight and dry.

image

One of my protective styles that blended the damaged ends with the new growth.

image

Result you could still see the straight ends of the hair but it doesn’t look as bad.

image

.

See the color just looks limp and lifeless unlike my facial expression.

image

So I decided today to cut off the damage ends completely.

image

This is the result…

Looks more healthy than my other two stand twist styles from this past year.

Shaanaya’s up-do

So this past weekend I was intrigued to try something a little different from the same braid out look. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE Braid outs, but I needed try something different. Trust me after the week do, I will most likely return to the braid out look, the tried and true. So any how here are a few photos of the turn out. Tell me what you think. Try to leave a photo of some of your up-do styles or a link…:-)

Natural Black Hair-Story

So it is almost the end of Black History Month, it came and is going so fast. Black History Month is always a great and significant reminder of the sacrifice that former black leaders have dedicated their time and efforts towards what we see and live today. The sweat of our ancestors and civil rights leaders has given us the opportunity to embrace who we are in a positive outlook, as well as a life which allows us to experience equal rights.  I can’t help but to take this time to remember many Natural Black women of the past and of today, because they allow me to embrace my Natural hair as a black women , which is also a part of who I am. These are just a few…

Pam Grier

Marsha Hunt

Maya Angelou

Diana Ross

Lauren Hill

"Rudy Huxtable" Keisha Knight

Tracee Ellis Ross

Esperanza Spalding

Corrine-Bailey Rae

Erykah Badu

These are just a few of mine, there are many many more. Who are your natural hair inspirations?

Braid out

Hey Fearfully and Wonderfully Naturals,

I know it’s been a while, I have been working on my second degree at UMDNJ which is a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Yay!!!! It is truly intense and 15 months of Nursing Education. Well enough about that.

I have now relocated to NJ and I am learning how adjust to the weather. God must be on my side because I have been worried that my hair would suffer from dryness and I have not faced any challenges as of yet. My current hair regime just includes Kinky Curly Knot today, shea butter, Miss Jessie’s Baby buttercreme and I like to keep my hair in braids for a few days and then wear it in a braid out for about 3 days and then wash again.

How do you maintain moisture in your hair during this winter season?
